Robert Ruark's last novel takes it's title from that ferocious animal, the ratel or honey badger, which has the peculiarity of always attacking the groin instead of the jugular. It stands here as a symbol for the American woman, with her tendency to rob the male of his masculinity. The book is set mainly in America and its chief character is seen fighting, or trying to fight, against the overpowering influence of the five most important women in his life: his mother, his first wife, his two mistresses and, finally, his young second wife. All, in their different ways seek to dominate and, metaphorically, castrate him.
