1 Chateaubriand, M. De Congress of Verona; Comprising a Portion of Memoirs of His Own Times
London, Richard Bentley, 1838, First Edition, Hard Cover, Good, History,
1838, first edition. Volume II only. red cloth over boards. 435 pages. ex-library with usual markings. some loose pages. front cover detached. well worn reading copy. "First Edition of the English Translation. Including considerable discussion of the revolted Spanish colonies in South America. Chateaubriand acted as French plenipotentiary at the Congress (1822), where the majority of powers voted to grant France the mandate to restore absolutism in Spain by force of arms. The French invasion hastened the recognition of the independence of the Spanish colonies by England, Canning declaring that he had "called a new world into existence to redress the balance of the old" and that "if France had Spain, it would at least be Spain without her colonies."
